Another year has passed, the second one after my really strict "Make and Mend" challenge. But why keep track of the things I purchase for myself?

- Because after publishing the post about the purchases the year after "make and mend" (ie a year ago), I was really shocked, how much I had bought! Lots of fabric for "fun sewing projects" and I counted 21 items I really didn't need at all (the *-things). So that is nearly 2 things a month that I didn't really need. In my defence: I did wear/use most of those clothes/items. But still. The most dispensable items were probably the bracelets I hardly wear. And two bras that don't really fit perfectly. A few other sewing projects with stuff i didn't really need... which puts me in a bit of a conflict - I really like sewing clothes, but there is the point, where all of our wardrobes are saturated...! I didn't even manage to make what I intended to make... that is a bit annoying.

So I decided to collect another year and see, how I am doing...

What I bought

6 tank tops
2 t-shirts black
4 pair jeans shorts (two different sizes, I went a bit up and down size-wise this year...)
1 pair of Marlene trousers (summer trousers)
1 sports bra

2 eye shadow base
1 mascara
1 pair of glasses (proper ones, not sunglasses)

2 books for work
1 backpack (doubles as work bag)
6 pairs of compression socks for work

(*)7 pairs of ballet slippers (I dance every week, they were on offer so I bought a few more than actually needed right that moment...)
*2 bras (I have a "bra thing" obviously...)
*1 shrug
*2 eye shadow
*1 pair of shoes (that broke 20min after wearing them?! The PU faux leather top came crumbling off!! that was the price for buying shoes I didn't need... at least I was reimbursed)
*1 book on baking (french pastry...)
*2 pairs of dancing shoes (second hand)
* hotfix stick and black stones for it

fabric for
- 2 pairs black trousers "jeans cut" ( Ginger Jeans, corduroy)
- 1 pair summer trousers (linen viscose mix)
- children comfy pants (christmas presents!)
- comfy pants for myself
- 3 t-shirts
- test fabric for leggings, shirt, a dress
- sequined fabric for 2 dresses

What I made

wool felt ball decoration
3 comfy pants for children (Frida by Milchmonster)
1 comfy pants for myself (Mama Frida by Milchmonster)
Jade skirt (by Paprika Patterns)
2 Sequined black Tango dress (own pattern and adaption of Twister Dress by apfelblüte)

What I mended

6 Tops (ok... I just shortened the straps)

Bikini Top Child No. 2
adjust Marlene trousers
woolen pullover (MOTHS!)

What went out
4 tank top (holes, fabric washed superthin)
7 t-shirts short and long sleeved (weird deodorant bobbles that won't come out in the wash any more and holes)
2 Shirts I stopped wearing and really won't wear anymore
1 pair of shoes (the ones that basically broke after 20mins of wearing them, first I wanted to cover them in black glitter, but it would have meant to first brush/scrape off the entire surface of faux leather (because it was crumbling off and would not be a good base for anything) and then invest in lots and lots of black glitter and glue... and I just couldn't see myself wearing black glitter loafer sort of shoes... really...)

* marks things I didn't really need...

I am so annoyed with technical "Progress" at the moment. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 mobile which works fine, I've had it for years. Apart from a new battery and the eventual restart, it didn't need anything. But now, slowly but surely, Apps don't recognize my mobile anymore. The model is not "supported". Or they are getting slower and slower to the extent, that I can't use them any more. So despite the fact that I don't really want a new mobile and despite the fact that technically it is working ok, it seems after so many years you just can't use them any more without getting annoyed. I mean - I am not trying to get to the moon with it or anything that really required advanced technology. I am just trying to use a wheather app and an online family organizer.

A while ago I had seen a lovely piece of decoration with some sticks and pompoms on top, which looked like little frozen snowball-flower-thingys. So first I thought I could just also do some pompoms, because I lived under the impression, I had some white felting-wool leftover somewhere. Well, there are either still somewhere - or I haven't got them anymore. Both is possible. Anyhow, I also was given some wool fleece, which I then decided to needle-felt into little woolen balls, then collect some straight sticks with the kids and tadaaa... finished.

It really didn't take much time to make these 5 balls, but I did manage to stab myself about 6 times, and gosh, those felting needles are sharp, it only starts bleeding first and hurst afterwards! I'm impressed. I was not really impressed by the combination of white wool and red blood though... not very winterly peaceful... :) I did manag to make 5 unstained ones in the end, miraculously. :)

I really like them, even if I have to admit, they are a little random and serve no real purpose but it was a fun thing to make. :)

Edit: The felting wool did turn up in the end to I made a few pompons with the kids (all sorts of colours). They are all made from felting wool, the white ones I sort of felted with water and soap and the green one is "as it is".

The return of stuffocation. Who would have though... After all my efforts to keep "stuff" out and surfaces empty and my "make and mend challenge" and getting rid of one thing in case a new item finds its way into our house. Yes. I am stuffocating again. Why? Well.... there is one room, that I've not talked about and that's been a "leftover" of the past, despite moving house and all - the cellar. Crypt of the unexpected. Doom of order. Place of no space. Area without visible floor. Yes, that's our cellar.

When we moved into the new flat in 2016, we had really tried to get rid of as many things as possible before - de-stuffi-fy. Does that word exist? If not, it ought to. But, truth is, I am a hoarder. Plus: Having children that grow and march through different development stages, leave traces. I have at least 6 boxes full of old baby clothes. Oh... and fabrics... yes, I know, fabrics mature... but you know another thing? - Some just get old and manky. That's the ones that weren't great in the first place. And then just hang around.

So: Hello 2020 and Heeelloooo, cellar! We are going to spend a lot of time with each other. Whish me luck. I feel the serious danger of disappearing forever between boxes and stuff.Hertzwerk Freiburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04794748313970398183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-585416217893220749.post-82941131846344728492020-01-02T10:46:00.001+01:002020-01-02T10:46:17.267+01:002020 sewing plans

Oh hello 2020, you already here?

So, what became of the 2019 sewing projects?

I have to admit, I didn't do much sewing in 2019. Because of work and family time I didn't have much time left for sewing so I reduced it to what needed to be done. And I also didn't need that much really. And it was good the way it was.

- I made some jeans/trousers (Ginger Jeans Pattern and pattern taken from old linen trousers), also for summer, which was good and useful.
- I made the Mahina Cardigan as part of the Scroop Pattern Pattern test. Which was great.
- I made some Jade Skirts from Paprika Patterns, which was a great quick and easy project.
- And I made another Otari hoodie (Scroop Patterns).
- And my biggest project was a tango dress (which I still need to write about, otherwise nobody will believe it actually exists...)
- Oh, and I managed to make comfy pants for myself, too. I also use them for yoga.

I managed to make some clothes for the kids (comfy suit and comfy pants).

The Satsuki Dress and the Vogue Dress 8728 are STILL waiting to be made.

Initially I had wanted to make a winter coat and t-shirts as well as Jeans shorts and a cardigan, but I happened to be able to buy all of those so I didn't have to make them, which was good because I didn't really have that much time for sewing this year. I also didn't manage to make a pullover for my natural minimalist. Also the idea of a dress for dancing is still only an idea, because making the actual mock-up is going to be so time consuming, that there is no way at the moment, that I can make it.

My historical sewing ("Project 1908") is still on hold because of lack of time and patience (a lot of research work still needs to be done before I can even start with the foundations...)

My modest Sewing Plans 2020

- Really really using up stash material.

- Pumpkin dress (Heidi and Finn) for the girls

- Satsuki Tunic (Victory patterns)

- Vogue 8728 dress

- 2 ginger jeans (fabric already cut!) (Closet Case Patterns)

- pillow cover from old t-shirt

- maybe yoga trousers (if necessary) (Milchmonster Mama Frida or Lolle Longlegs by Katjuschka)

- Bethioua shirt (Ellepuls)

- another tango dress (already cut!)

- Bronte shirt short sleeved (Jennifer Lauren)

Oh, and I've got sooo many dreams about sewing... but well get to that when these 10 plans have been put into action.

So Christmas is here and as we traditionally do, we put up the tree and most of the Christmas decoration on my husbands birthday. This years, I've tried out this "christmas twig" decoration for the kitchen window (hanging is really the ony ways to decorate our home, because we have no windowsills!- apart from the one in the kitchcen, which is so close to the sink, that it is unsuitable)

I got the idea from one of the neighbours and despite my inability to take fancy photographs, I find it is really pretty. :)Hertzwerk Freiburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04794748313970398183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-585416217893220749.post-3852848919197028302019-11-30T00:00:00.000+01:002019-11-30T00:00:11.874+01:00The Paradox of our Age

I hope we can take the chances that we're given and change to the better.
Especially in December things seem to speed up in commercialism. And around Christmas everybody is so stresses about what to buy for your loved ones. But do you have to by. Isn't it enough to be? Be there for each other, spend time with each other and tell each other what moves us. And get to know them again?

I actually did have this ready in time for the first of October but it's been really busy here so the picture had to wait. All around us the colours of the leaves are changing and it's been a beautiful October so far. We've been flying kites and collecting leaves and are currently enjoying a warm weather situation with temperatures up to 26 degrees celsius!
We've also found an awful lot of fly agarics and other mushrooms that didn't look edible but very pretty. And on another walk we discovered stone age caves that people were using as a shelter about 13000 years ago! Amazing! (obviously we didn't discover them first, but it was a first for us...)

And I find this month's Elsa Beskow calender leaf most endearing!
I'm interested in what factors contribute to a happy or content life. I think I've established quite well, that I don't believe in shopping to be a safe and reliant source for happiness. A couple of days ago I stumbled across the "Six-factor Model of Psychological Wellbeing" by Carol Ryff. So thought I'd share it with you.
September has begun, this time the meteorological beginning of autumn is also on the 1st of September and I managed to put up the table in time AND get it online in the beginning of September, too. :) Yes, I know, there are no flowers in that little vase, but I am waiting for the children to find some.

The nights are certainly becoming a little chillier, even if daytime temperature can still be up to 32°C. I am looking forward to "Zwetschgenkuchen", which is one of my favourite (it's a special kind of plum, but basically it is plum cake with crumble...). In fact there is one in the oven as I am writing this. :)
The Else Beskow card for this month reminds me of our little apple tree, which is already (despite being quite a young tree) growing a few apples. We've been cutting the hedge and everywhere you find little hints at autumn coming. But for the moment, we are enjoying a warm and pleasant late summer.Hertzwerk Freiburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04794748313970398183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-585416217893220749.post-72063677416047289672019-09-01T15:29:00.002+02:002019-09-01T15:29:37.553+02:00Seasonal Table August 2019

I am a big fan of cardigans/shrugs that are easy to wear and easy to make. So here is a pattern for a crochet cocoon cardigan, of you want to go all the way.

BUT you can also take a shortcut and just take and kind of fabric that you seem suitable to be used/seen from both sides. E.g. a wool knit or a punto di roma jersey or a heavier wool knit - whatever works for you. Just keep in mind that the inside will be seen and the weight of the fabric will determine the drape of the cardigang. Anything goes though.

You need a rectangle. The instructions call for 91x101cm (37"x40") but you can see what you like best. And you need some fabric for the cuffs. you can make them longer or thin, you can omit them completely and leave a wider opening (just add some bias tape to finish the edge). Anything goes.

And then put the fabric together the same way the cochetes rectangle would be put together.

That's it!

In Germany, people buy 60 items of clothing each year and 20% aren't worn once.

If you understand German, here is an interesting discussion about fast fashion.

https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/oekobilanz-der-textilindustrie-fast-fashion-um-jeden-preis.1083.de.html?dram%3Aarticle_id=452816&fbclid=IwAR1lmrs0uxgy0d_3atNtinwaHyC9f22eRJuqLwhXTo96Is9D9ofdjgtulV0

And what does this have to do with costumes... well, I am in a bit of a crisis with my costume sewing - while I would very much like to do some historical sewing ("Project 1908"), I wonder, whether it is not a pure waste of resources. On the other hand I learn so many new techniques and about fitting from it, that it probably does help me and maybe one IS allowed to have a little bit of a hobby...? But: Make it count! Good quality fabrics, no rushing over a project, no shortcuts.Hertzwerk Freiburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04794748313970398183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-585416217893220749.post-1496453238419225922019-07-02T16:04:00.000+02:002019-07-02T16:04:17.440+02:00Seasonal table July 2019

The Spring Flower girl now really went to bed, with temperatures near to 40°Celsius it was not really refreshing anymore.
So, as surprisingly as always, June is already more than half way over... and despite being in time with putting up the table, I didn't take a picture ...

We had quite a heavy wind these past few days and my lovely roses were bent under the rain and the storm.... so I cut them and now we have them in the flat. (the same actually happened to my peonies, so we had a wonderful peony bouquet on the dining table for about a week... it was beautiful, although they would have been beautful outside, too). One side effect of garden flowers is, that lots of ants seems to live in them and the children keep finding them crawing on the table (and "rescue" them... some even make it...)

Although the little flower child is a spring child really, we wanted her to be on the table still, because she is sooo cute!

In the background a postcard with Elsa Beskow's "June". It couldn't be more apt.

One of the things I am enjoying more and more, is yoga. I can't emphasize enough, how wonderful moving around and keeping active is. For me personally, Yoga is a form of sports, that suits me best.

I used to feel sports was more like something you "have to do" and a bit too time consuming. It wasn't something I thoroughly enjoyed. I am grateful I have made the experience, that physical activity is a wonderful thing and keeps you happy and feeling warm and well inside. For me, it is Yoga, for others walking or running or climbing or dancing or cycling or any other way of moving around. I hope for everybody out there, that you find your way of being active and enjoy being in motion. Outside, inside, wherever.

So, if you understand German and enjoy Yoga, this Youtube Channel might be intersting for you, I think she does great videos and has very precise instructions. There is something for every energy level!
I am currently joining this Challenge, but there is lots more to discover
PS: I don't get paid or anything for saying this, I just really like her Channel and what she's doing.Hertzwerk Freiburghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04794748313970398183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-585416217893220749.post-31275977664228849712019-06-04T00:00:00.000+02:002019-06-04T09:36:16.939+02:00The year after "The Make and Mend Challenge"

So the last 12 months (3 June 2018 - 3rd June 2019) I did not consciously follow the "Make and Mend" Challenge. In fact, i had decided to actively NOT be too strict with myself like I had been while on the challenge, especially the first year. Nevertheless, I thought it might be good to keep a list of what I bought (just what was for my own pleasure, not counting household and kids stuff), out of curiosity. And here it is:

What I bought in the last 12 months:
- fabric for Vogue dress and satsuki dress*
- fabric for 4x corduroy Ginger trousers (2x black, 2x mustard) (2x black done, also 1x mustard done, looks horrible on me, disposed of...)
- 3x eye shadow*
- 2 make-up remover

- 1 pashmina shawl*
- tights (pack of two, opaque black)
- 1 pair yellow tights*
- 2 black bikini
- 1 teal bikini*
- undies (ok, it was just easier to buy them than making more myself... lazy me...)
- 5 bras*
- 2 Fasnacht Costumes (Cookie Monster and Cheshire Cat onesies...)*
- 2 oversized scarves in white/yellow and white/berry shades*
- 1 pair earrings (for Christmas)

What I made in the last 12 months:
- Ginger Jeans (3x indigo stretch jeans)
- Ginger Corduroy (2x black, low waist)
- jade skirt mini purple
- Jade skirt midi teal
- Jade Skirt black satin (from stash fabric yay!!)
- jade skirt black knit (punto di roma)
- Vroni Dirndl for Child No 1
- Mini Dirndl for Nora Doll
- Remake of favourite linen trousers (2x)
- high waist ginger trousers in mustard - gosh, those looked awful! :)
- Otari Hoodie with stars
- bendable waldorf doll
- dress for Alina doll
- Black Twister Dress
- Circle Wool knit Cardigan (Scroop Patterns) and Rectangular Mahina (Scroop Patterns)

What I mended in the last 12 months:
- 3 jeans (zipper teeth fell out, very very very annoying, because - well fitted self made jeans!!)
- childs dress (zipper broke, replaced)
- 1 glove (some stitches had become undone, easy fix)
- wooly pullover (moths or cabinet bugs had a go at it, I think and hope in our old flat. mending was no problem, only small holes)

Upcycling
A neighbour moved house and sorted through her clothing and she allowed me to have a rummage through that, and I found a lovely wool cardigan that fit (I will try and publish the pattern at some point) and a couple of pullovers that are of nice material only a bit big and a bit much "bat style" for me. So I upcycled. Again, trying to put pictures of that online asap. :)

What went out
- a lot of my clothes seemed to just fall apart this year...-
- 7 t-shirts- holes, washed thin and they seem to get these "deodorant bobbles" under the arms after some years...?
- 3 tops (washed thin, fabric "breaking", holes, lace trim ripped apart everywhere)
- 1 pyjama (holes)
- 3 jeans (holes, 1 JUST DOESN'T FIT and hasn't for years...)
- 1 lamp (given to friend)
- children's chair (just collapsed, with the child on it! 😲)
- 1 pair yoga/sports pants (holes beyond mending)
- 1 black coat (really sad, one of my favourites, but now the fabric is thin at the shoulders, holes at the sleeves and some seams are opening - in short - it is really beyond saving... it's starting to look really shabby)
- 2 knit dresses (didn't wear it..., went to charity)
- 1 woolen cardigan (big holes in a very very fine transparent knit, impossible to mend)
- 1 pencil skirt (too high waisted, doesn't fit properly)

* I marked items that were not absolutely necessary with this star *
Can you see, how many stars there are?!? Nearly all of it is marked as "unnecessary"! I'm a little upset about this...
