Stays - the Reconstructing History 833 pattern review

So, 

I have decided to make a new set of stays. Despite the fact that I could just make another pair of the JPR Stays adjusted to my "after-baby-shape" (I seem to have shrunk...), I have started on the Reconstructing History pattern #833... they seemed rather interesting. An open/stomacher version, a regular front, wide front and a late 1790s high waist one. The pattern pieces do NOT correspond with ANY of the stays pictured on the envelope of the pattern though and you have to do lots of improvising. I don't think I needed to buy a pattern for that... if I want to draft a pattern myself I don't buy a pattern (applied logic...). Well, anyway, I copied my size and the different versions and startet on the mock-up.

At first this suggestion to make the stays cut in one piece out of cardboard  (as the mock-up) seemed quite alright, but I have to says I am not completely happy. I also have to make quite a lot of changes. The pattern seems to assume that the side and front of your body is rather the same measurement (sort of round or square shaped, or trianguar or so, weird anyway), but I find I am rather elliptic. Thinking about it, I think most people are... The front is really really slim (about 30% smaller than me and I am more on the petite side...) so I had to widen the front piece considerably (and I just wanted a regular width for a mid 18th century version). The side pieces are relatively wide and then the back is superwide which means I have to remove about 30% width of the back and side sections at least. Also I find the instructions quite sketchy. I feel a bit like the general idea of what sort of pieces stays at different times were made of was thrown at me but to actually make something of it is left to me entirely. 

Also I find the tabs disturbingly long (about 10cms, and totally different (in proportion) to the pictures). Anyway, I find it a bit hard to find the motivation to go on with this pattern. I am thinking about using this pattern for the stomacher version only (there's probably a reason why that is the only picture on their homepage). It seems a waste to have bought a pattern and not do anything with it... maybe it's me, but I can't really recommend this pattern, I would even go so far to say keep your hands away.. I will do the fitting for the stomacher version and keep you updated, but if you are planning to do a set of stays, go for the JPR or Period Impressions ones, they all need careful fitting but those are minor to what I am facing at the moment. I am also going to try the NP13 Diderot stays pattern, I will let you know if there is any progress. For now, I say toodle-pip and I am grumbling along. ;)

Zeilitzheim 1763 - Treaty of Paris

1763 - The Seven Years War is finally over and the Treaty of Paris has been signed. Enough to travel to Zeilitzheim and celebrate in the more than pleasant company of fellow costumers. I am quite good at escaping the camera so again there is little evidence of my activities... but here's what I've got so far:

The Walpole Francaise - 1750-70s

I have finished the Robe a la Francaise in the 1750s-70s style. I have followed the JPRyan pattern for the Pet-en-l'air/Robe a la Francaise. The pattern itself was very precise sizewise and ran rather short (upper length) which means I didn't have to make big adjustments there.

 My inspiration was this painting by Gainsborough of Maria Walpole. I am not a big big fan of lacy, chantilly-like decoration, so I opted for a plain black stomacher, and less laces at the sleeves, my sleeves flounces are plain black silk tafetta, as the rest of the robe. I am not sure about how much decoration is on the robe itself (in the painting, that is) and again I decided for the plain silk taffetta. I like the way the light is reflected on it and the back pleats should be the center of attention anyway (imho).

Unterwegs mit Baby/Kleinkind in Freiburg

On the road in Freiburg with baby...

Ok, als Jungmami beschäftigt man sich ja mit einigem Absurden, aber für alle anderen frischgebackenen Mamis, die mit ihrem Nachwuchs in Freiburg unterwegs sind, hier ein paar nützliche Anlaufpunkte für die Babypflege und Unterhaltung und Anlaufstellen mit Mikrowellen fürs etwas grössere Baby/Kleinkind.

Wickeln:

Soweit ich informiert bin, hat jeder dm-drogeriemarkt in Freiburg einen Wickelplatz. Ich kenne den in der Eisenbahnstrasse (ganz hinten links, die Toilette dort ist auch so gross, dass man den Kinderwagen mit reinnehmen kann, Schlüssel an der Phototheke) und alle 3 in der KaJo, alle haben einen guten Wickeltisch mit allem, was man zum Wickeln braucht, auch Windeln in verschiedenen Grössen. Besondere Erwähnung: der dm unterm Karstadt: eigenes Wickel- und Stillzimmer. UND in der Toilette gibt's eine tiefergelegte Kindertoilette für grosse kleine Kinder.

Auch der Karstadt hat einen grosszügigen Raum zum Wickeln (4.OG bei den Toiletten). 

Der Breuniger hat einen kleinen aber feinen Wickelraum im 2.OG, gleich rechts am Fahrstuhl, manchmal gibt's auch Windeln.

IKEA in Freiburg hat 2 Wickel- und Stillräume, einer ist gleich beim Eingang, einer oben beim Restaurant.Außerdem hat der IKEA Freiburg jetzt auch Kindertoiletten auf Kinderniveau (zumindest bei den Damen)

Die Buchhandlung Herder hat ebenfalls im UG bei den Toiletten eine gute Wickelmöglichkeit.

Caféhaus in der Gartenstrasse hat einen miniwickeltisch im UG unter der Treppe.

mana am Augustinerplatz hat im UG bei den  Damentoiletten einen Wickeltisch.

Man soll's nicht glauben, sogar der obi, Tullastrasse, hat einen Wickeltisch, in der Damentoilette.

Das Cafe Extrablatt hat einen Wickeltisch in der Rollstuhl-Toilette, spartanisch, aber ok.

Oma's Küche hat im UG in der DAmentoilette einen Wickeltisch.

Das Café im Seepark hat hinten bei den Toiletten eine Klapptisch, den man als Wickeltisch benutzen darf. Keine Auflage, etwas rutschig und man muss wirklich aufpassen, das das Baby nicht runterfällt.

Buchhandlung Rombach, Bertoldstrasse: In der Behindertentoilette im Erdgeschoss

Im müller markt (KaJo) gibts einen Wickeltisch bei den Toiletten im Flur. Keine Ausstattung aber genug Platz für Kinderwagen. 

Sogar die H&M in der KaJo haben mittlerweile eine Wickelmöglichkeit.

Im Bursengang BURSE Café gibt es im Untergeschoss einen Extra Wickelraum MIT Kindertoilette und Kinderwaschbecken (also kleiner und tiefergelegt). Sehr sauber bei unserem Besuch. 

in Ruhe Stillen:

nicht ganz einfach, aber möglich:

Im dm-drogeriemarkt in der Eisenbahnstrasse ist im Wickelzimmerchen eine Stuhl, man kann hier relativ in Ruhe stillen. Die dm in der KaJo am Bertoldsbrunnen hat eine Bank unten in der Kinderabteilung, nicht total ungestört aber meist in guter Begleitung. Der dm in der KaJo unterm Karstadt hat ein eigenes abschließbares Wickel und Stillzimmer. Und eine tiefergelegte Toilette für grosse kleine Kinder. Der dm in der KaJo beim Holzmarkt hat KEINE Stillmöglichkeit.

Karstadt hat einen eigenen Wickel- und Stillraum im 4. OG bei den Toiletten.


Galeria Kaufhof hat hinten im Restaurant ein Spielzimmer, da steht auch ein gemütlicher Sessel und ein kleiner Tisch auf dem man zur Not auch wickeln könnte, Sichtschutz gibts auch.

Bei  gutem Wetter kann man sich auf eine der Bänke des Spielplatzes auf dem Augustinerplatzes setzen. Da ist Schatten und man ist ein bisschen in Ruhe (mal abgesehen vom Kindergeräuschpegel)

 

Füttern:

Beim Karstadt im 4.OG kann man nicht nur einen Kaffee auf der Terasse trinken, es gibt auch eine gute, saubere Mikrowelle zum Erwärmen von Babynahrung.

Auch Galeria Kaufhof hat eine Mikrowelle,die man problemlos nutzen kann. 

Das Cafe Extrablatt erwärmt mitgebrachte Babynahrung, die Bedienung hier ist sehr babyfreundlich.

IKEA hat im Restaurant eine Mikrowelle und Einmallätzen, es gibt im Restaurant kostenlosen Bio-Babybrei (bei uns wars Buttergemüse von Alete, das war sogar lecker).

Ich hab bestimmt was vergessen und kenne ne Menge guter Anlaufstellen nicht - bitte schreibt mir/uns einfach unten einen Kommentar, damit wir und noch mehr Mamis stressfreier on the road mit baby kommen!!!

Und wenn das Baby grösser wird und rennt, rennt rennt den ganzen Tag - dann geht's Raus in die NATUR!! Oder woandershin...

Stomacher Walpole Francaise Stecker

 

Unglaublich aber wahr, ich habe die Stickerei für den Wechselstecker der Walpole Francaise fertig!!! Ich habe dafür das Crewel Embroidery Kit von neheleniapatterns.com benutzt. Nachdem die erste Herausforderung war, eine neue Nadel zu besorgen (für das mitgelieferte Nadelöhr war ich zu blöd, ich hab den Faden einfach nicht reingekriegt), habe ich nach der Geburt von Lucy angefangen und heute, 5 Monate später, bin ich fertig und ganz zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass ich nochmal einen Stomacher sticke, ist allerdings eher gering. Mir fehlt die Zeit und ich habe doch auch noch so viele andere Dinge vor!!! eigenlich müsste das Leinen noch etwas besser gebügelt werden, aber Bügeln ist nicht meine Stärke und über die Stickerei schon gar nicht. Hängt sich doch bestimmt aus... bis ich die Francaise soweit habe, vergehen bestimmt noch Monate... (bei meinem aktuellen Tempo...)! :) 

- You won't believe this, but I have ACUTALLY really finished the crewel embroidery for the stomacher of the Walpole Francaise!!! It took me 5 months since Lucy's birth and I am quite pleased with it. It would need some ironing, but I am not very good at that, especially if it includes hand-embroidered things...

aufgehübscht - Kuschelfussack für den Winter

Das hier ist mein alter Kinderwagen-Fussack. Ich habe ihn etwas aufgehübscht, weil er nach der Wäsche die Form verloren hat - das Innenvlies war von Haus aus nicht fest mit dem Bezug verbunden und hat eine Riesenwurst gebildet. Also: an der Seite aufgetrennt, Vlies rausgewurschtelt, Vlies wieder ordentlich reingewurschtelt und BEFESTIGT. Ich habe mich für die Variante "auffällig repariert" entschieden. mit rotem Wollgarn habe ich am Fussende und an den Rändern einen Kreuzstich geschlagen und auf diese dann im Umschlag und an den Füssen Quasten (aus demselben Garn, ich hab schon eeeewig keine Troddeln mehr gebastelt!! gute Übung...) angenäht. Weil das Futter im Umschlag dann immer noch widerspenstig war, habe ich ein kleines Kreuzstich Herz  in die Mitte genäht. Die aufgetrennte Seitennaht habe ich auch mit groben Kreuzstich wieder verschlossen. Fertig. Ich finde es sehr schön und Winston, der Bär, auch.

- This is my old foot muff . After washing the warm fleece inlet had developed a curious living of its own, curling up and being very obstinate. So I got it out and straightened it up again, somehow managed to get it back in and re-attached it with crossstich. On top of those I sew some self-made tassels (Haven't done that for a while...) and because the inlet still was a bit weird at the openig I attached it further with a little cross stitch heart. All in red wool. I am quite happy with it and Winston, the bear, is too.

 

Walpole Francaise - 2

I've made some small progress on the Walpole-Francaise. I have pleated like crazy on the back (the "graceful pleats"...) and also had some fun (due to not absolutely fool-proof instructions and lack of experience and knowledge on the subject) folding the front robings... thanks to Mme du Jard the problem is solved and meanwhile not only the back fold are pleated and the front robings completed, but I have also attached the front to the back and sides and things are gaining shape. (it's looking like a huge black thing now...). The Lining is finished, I just have to insert the boning and after fitting the sleeves of the robe I can attach the lining to the silk and then... tadaaaaa, nearly finished. I still haven't made my mind up about the sleeves. Or to be more precise: what I am going to do about the sleeve flounce and lace.


- Ich habe Fortschritte bei der Walpole-Francaise gemacht. Nachdem ich wie eine Wilde die Rückenfalten gelegt habe (soooo anmutig...) und extrem viel Spass mit den Front robings hatte (eine uneindeutige Anleitung und Mangel an Erfahrung... vielen Dank an Mme du Jard, ohne deren Hilfe ich das mal gar nicht hingekriegt hätte...!), ist nun Vorne gefaltet, hinten gefaltet und alles aneinander genäht. Jetzt muss ich noch die Ärmel einsetzen und das Futter (da fehlen noch die Stäbchen) und dann muss ich noch das Ärmelspitzenproblem lösen (ist mehr Unschlüssigkeit als ein Problem) und dann bin ich fast fertig. :)
